Timeline Lesson: African Americans in Early Philadelphia

Grades 9-12

Objective

All of the events on the attachment have a major impact on the African-American community of early Philadelphia.  As part of a greater unit on Colonial history, Philadelphia history, or Black history, this lesson should be used to demonstrate time spans in history.

Materials

List of 13 events, with and without dates (see attachments below).

Approach

Using the 13 events on the attached list, print out the version without dates and cut up — or copy each event without its date onto a 3 x 5 card.  Have students brainstorm what the possible chronological arrangement might be.  Names such as Tubman and Douglass, events such as the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, may provide hints to put the cards into order.  Feel free to add to or delete any events on the list!
